April 23, 2014 - Driveway cable trench.

My new U-Verse cable wasn't buried deep enough across where we are going to pour concrete to connect the existing driveway with the garage pad. The cable locator came out and marked the location and depth of the cable. At one spot the cable was only 2 inches below the surface, and we will cutting 4-6 inches off at that point.

I decided that in addition to burying the cable deeper I would also run a PVC conduit under the driveway just in case I need to run other cables under the driveway. After some manual labor to pull the cable I used the backhoe to make a trench for the existing cable and my new conduit. One challenge was making sure that I didn't set the leveling feet down on the cable.

My objective while digging was to keep the trench level from end to end and keep the bottom as even as possible. I think I did pretty good from end to end, but the bottom of the trench is kinda wavy. I'm still getting used to the fine controls on the hoe and the valves tend to stick a little. Hopefully with some use the valves will loosen up and I'll get better with them. I find that it is very similar to learning the controls of a model airplane. Just more destructive if you screw up.
