7/3/2014 - Front of carport sheeting done.

Today was front of the carport day. Leroy and Audifaz set the first panel in place on the left side and marked it for the roof angle. They brought it back over to the garage and we marked and cut the angle. Back on the wall we had a perfect fit and a template on the ground. Each panel SHOULD have the same amount cut off to be correct for the roof angle. The panels grow a foot in length till we get to the roof peak. We measured the long end of the panel that was on the wall and transferred that measurement to the next panel on the ground. I would then use the template to draw my cut line and start cutting. I finished the second panel and when they got it up it was too long by a little more than an inch. We brought it back down, re-cut and stuck it back up. We measured again and drew our line and cut the next panel. What were we doing wrong? It was too long as well. It finally dawned on me that Leroy was measuring at the end of the panel and because of the overlap on the panels the measurement was too long by an inch or so. I had him start measuring where the overlap would end and our cuts were perfect (or as close as a bunch of amateurs can be). We became so confident in our system that we started doing all of the measurements on the ground before we even sent the panels up.

Then we came to the roof peak where the two panels overlap by 2 feet and the roof pitch changes to go down the other side. Both panels would require a double cut and the point of the roof peak should be in the center of the two panels when overlapped. The first panel turned out fine, the second panel got cut about an inch short on the initial cut, but the extra exposure will get covered with trim pieces.

The front was done by 11:00am so Leroy and Audifaz set to work adding an angle piece under the purlins so that we’d have a place to attach the top of the sheeting on the inside garage door wall. After some discussion as to how best to orient the piece, they got it secured and we called it a day at Noon. We still have 2 walls to put up, the back wall and the garage door wall. We’ll get started on those on Monday. We’ll then have to figure out what time of day we want to do the roof. It has been really stinking hot here and being on a hot tin roof in 95 degree heat sounds dangerous. We may do split shifts and work very early morning and then early evenings after the sun is down or later. We’ve got a few days to think about that.
